our airport travel experience from dubai to tivat 10 day free montenegro visit visa

If you saw our earlier post, Montenegro Opens 10-Day Visa-Free Trips for UAE Residents, you already know the basics about this seasonal program. This time, we want to share what actually happened at both airports when our family made the trip.

Just a bit of context, we are a family of three, Filipino passport holders, and UAE residents for more than three years. This 3-year continuous residency detail matters, because it’s what made us eligible.

About the Program

Montenegro currently offers a seasonal 10-day free visa-on-arrival arrangement for eligible UAE residents. To qualify, you generally need:

  • A direct flight from the UAE to Montenegro
  • Proof of at least 3 continuous years of UAE residency
  • Valid travel insurance for your stay
  • Confirmed hotel bookings

Even though we had already come across the program through news articles and Reddit threads, we still wanted official confirmation before booking anything. We emailed the Embassy of Montenegro in the UAE directly at montenegrouae@mfa.gov.me, and they responded with a clear confirmation.

That reply became our proof that the program was real — not just something circulating online. We’ll paste the actual quote from the embassy below.

Below is the Email from Embassy of Montenegro in UAE

Holders of foreign travel documents of any nationality who have a valid residence permit in the United Arab Emirates for a continuous period of at least three years prior to entering Montenegro can enter Montenegro by direct flights via FlyDubai and stay in Montenegro for up to ten days, from 1 May 2026 to 1 October 2026, without a visa, if they have a valid travel document and a certificate of a tourist arrangement (to have the confirmed hotel booking and travel insurance with you when traveling).

Note: The authorities hold the right to deny boarding or entry to any individual based on their own security check.

The Government of Montenegro will not bear any cost or responsibility for any refusal or denied entry to the Country.

If the above requirements are not met, then you will be required to apply for a visa.

Please refer to the attached for all the details to apply for a Montenegro visa.

The visa application processing time is 15 business days. Kindly ensure all documents are submitted at the soonest and your travel plans are scheduled with the processing time in mind.

Please note that you can apply for the visit / tourist visa without the letter of invitation or letter of guarantee, they are supposed to be filled and notarized by someone from Montenegro if they are inviting / guaranteeing your trip, but all the other documents are required to apply for the visa.

Please note that you may proceed with your visa application via VFS Visa Centre in the UAE. You may refer to the attached contact sheet of VFS Global in UAE. you may contact them and they will assist you to proceed with your visa application.

Documents We Carried

We kept both digital and printed copies of everything. Here’s exactly what we brought:

  • Confirmed Hotel bookings covering all 5 days
  • Our direct flydubai flight from Dubai to Tivat
  • Travel insurance for the full duration of our trip
  • Copies of our previous Emirates IDs and UAE residence visas, proving at least 3 continuous years in the UAE
  • A printed copy of the embassy email confirming the 10-day visa program

That last one gave us peace of mind, just in case anyone questioned whether the program was real.

Our DXB Airport Experience

Here’s something important: the checks start in Dubai, not in Montenegro.

At check-in, flydubai staff carefully reviewed our documents before handing over our boarding passes. They focused on our Emirates IDs as the main proof of residency. They double-checked the dates to make sure we have been residents for at least 3 years in the UAE.

At the immigration counter, we passed through it without any problem. Then, at the boarding gate, staff double-checked our details again before letting us board. So please, arrive early.

If your documents aren’t ready or complete, you may not even make it onto the plane. Give yourself extra time to avoid any stress.

Our Tivat Airport Arrival Experience

After landing in Tivat, we headed straight to immigration.

The officer checked our residence ID copies, hotel bookings, and travel insurance. To be honest, there was a slight English language barrier, so we weren’t entirely sure how closely everything was reviewed. The officer then checked with a colleague before deciding.

We made sure to mention that there’s a program for direct flights from Dubai. We’re not certain they were fully familiar with it, but after a short pause, they stamped our passports and let us in.

Our takeaway: stay calm, keep your documents handy, and be polite. Having everything organized made the moment much smoother for us.

A Few Reminders

Not everyone will qualify for the 10-day UAE resident visa-on-arrival. If that’s your situation, you may still have options.

The 30-Day Alternative

Travelers who hold a valid visa or residence permit from the United States, the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, or the Republic of Ireland may be allowed to enter Montenegro for up to 30 days, subject to the validity of that visa or permit. This is worth checking if you already have one of these.

Applying for a Visa Instead

If you’re not eligible for visa on arrival at all, you can apply for a Montenegrin visa through VFS at WAFI Mall. Just contact VFS directly to confirm the latest requirements before you go, since these can change.

Quick Recap

Here’s what helped us the most:

  • Confirm first: email the embassy at montenegrouae@mfa.gov.me before booking anything.
  • Book a direct flight: this is a core requirement, not optional.
  • Prepare proof of 3+ years’ residency: previous Emirates IDs and visas count.
  • Carry insurance and hotel proof: both digital and printed.
  • Arrive early at DXB: checks happen at check-in and at the gate.

A trip like this is a lovely reward for the years of hard work so many of us put in here in the UAE. With a little preparation, it’s very doable for families.

This was simply our experience. We hope it helps you plan your own trip with more confidence. Safe travels!

Note: Travel rules can change without notice. Always confirm the latest requirements directly with the Embassy of Montenegro and your airline before booking.
