“Never settle for less,” states Jaymar, a 32-year-old Filipino who has been based in Dubai for several years now. He has consistently aimed for great things, having been a full scholar when he was still a college student back in the Philippines. In 2016, he took the Registered Master Electrician (RME) Board Exam, and ranked Top 9 among thousands of test-takers!
These days, Jaymar enjoys a thriving career in Dubai, playing two diverse roles: a full-time Service Engineer, and a part-time content creator for Cruizine’, a digital food and travel media brand that features culinary spots, restaurants, and hidden gems.
In this OFW feature, Jaymar talks about his career plans, as well as his passion for exploring the sights, sounds, and tastes of the UAE. 1. Tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Jaymar, 32 years old, currently working full-time as a Service Engineer, and part-time as a content creator with our social media page, Cruizine’. I graduated with a degree in Industrial Electrical Technology from MFI Technological Institute (formerly Meralco Foundation Inc.) under a full scholarship.
One of my proudest achievements was becoming a Top 9 passer in the April 2016 PRC Registered Master Electrician Board Exam. I’ve been in Dubai for several years, and every experience has helped me grow, both professionally and personally.
2. Why did you come to Dubai?
I came to Dubai because of the opportunities. I received a direct-hire offer in Abu Dhabi, and I knew it was a chance I shouldn’t miss. Like many OFWs, my goal was to build a better future for myself and my family.
3. What were your previous jobs?
Before moving to the UAE, I worked in the Philippines as a Team Lead for Project Design in an American-based company. That experience strengthened my technical knowledge, leadership skills, and work ethic, which became a strong foundation for my career in Dubai.
4. How do you find your current job? Are you happy with it?
Yes, I’m happy with both of my careers. As a Service Engineer, I enjoy solving technical challenges and learning something new every day. As a content creator, I enjoy sharing food, travel, and experiences that help people discover new places. Both careers are different, but they continue to help me grow.
Yes. Saving and investing have always been part of my priorities. I currently own a house and lot in Nueva Ecija and a condominium unit in Quezon City that is being rented out. My next goal is to continue investing and eventually build a business related to content creation.
6. Is it difficult to live in Dubai? What are your struggles? What’s life like outside work?
The beginning wasn’t easy because I had to adjust to a new country, new people, and a different environment. Over time, I realized that every challenge is part of the journey. If you stay patient, work hard, and keep improving yourself, opportunities will come.
Outside work, I enjoy exploring new food spots, traveling, creating content, playing board games with friends, and working out.
7. What do you like about Dubai?
I appreciate Dubai because of its safety, security, quality healthcare, and the opportunities it provides. It has become my second home and has helped me achieve many of my goals.
8. What do you NOT Like about Dubai?
I don’t really dislike Dubai. If there’s one challenge, it’s that there are so many opportunities that it’s easy to overwork yourself. That’s why I always remind myself to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life.
9. What are your plans for your career, family, and future?
My goal is to continue growing my investments and eventually build a successful business in Dubai or the Philippines. I’m proud to be one of the breadwinners of my family. Being able to support the education of my two younger siblings, and improving our family’s quality of life, are some one of my greatest achievements.
10. Do you have any tips for kabayans who are working, or planning to work, in Dubai?
Never settle for less. Keep learning, improving, and looking for opportunities to grow. Be proud to be Filipino wherever you are, and always choose to support others instead of bringing them down. When we help each other succeed, we all move forward together.
