SHARJAH, UAE: Doctors at Kuwait Hospital Sharjah performed emergency surgery on a patient who swallowed a 12-centimeter nail and a metal spoon, saving his life after the objects tore through part of his small intestine and caused digestive contents to leak into his abdominal cavity.
According to Sharjah24.ae, the patient arrived at the emergency department in critical condition. Staff at the hospital, part of Emirates Health Services (EHS), ran diagnostic imaging and moved quickly to surgery.
Dr. Ibrahim Al Nujumi, head of the surgery department, said the nail had perforated the duodenum — the upper section of the small intestine — leaving no room for delay. The team performed an endoscopic exploration to locate the objects, then surgically removed both items, repaired the perforated tissue, and preserved surrounding organs.
The patient was placed under close observation after the procedure and has since shown steady improvement with no further complications.
Afra Salim, director of Kuwait Hospital Sharjah, said the outcome reflects the hospital staff’s ability to handle complex emergencies quickly, consistent with EHS’s standards for patient-centered care.
