There has been great interest among overseas Filipino workers in the proposed OFW Pension Act, which seeks to provide a Php 5,000 monthly pension to qualified OFWs.
For Filipinos who have spent years working abroad, the proposal offers hope for additional financial support during retirement.
We hope to see the measure move forward and eventually become another source of protection for OFWs. For now, however, the proposed pension has not yet become law.
So, what do we know, and what can OFWs do while waiting?

Where the Php 5,000 OFW Pension Stands
Senate Bill No. 252, or the OFW Pension Act of 2025, proposes creating an Overseas Filipino Workers Pension Fund.
The measure is still going through the legislative process. This means the proposed ₱5,000 monthly pension is not yet an available government benefit.
OFWs interested in the proposal can follow its progress themselves through the Senate’s official Legislative Information System: Check Senate Bill No. 252 and its latest status
Look for “Legislative Status” on the bill’s page. This shows where the proposal currently stands.
This is also a useful way to fact-check future announcements. A Senate bill number confirms that a proposal exists, but a filed bill is not automatically an approved law.
What Can OFWs Do While Waiting? Contribute to SSS Monthly
While we hope the OFW Pension Act eventually becomes law, OFWs can already prepare for retirement through the Social Security System (SSS).
SSS coverage is compulsory for covered land-based and sea-based OFWs. When overseas employment ends, members may also continue contributing voluntarily, subject to SSS rules.
One number worth remembering is 120 monthly contributions.
Under current SSS rules, a qualified retiree who has paid at least 120 monthly contributions before the semester of retirement can receive a monthly pension for life. Those with fewer than 120 may generally receive a lump sum, but eligible members can continue paying voluntarily to complete the required 120 contributions.
Check How Many SSS Contributions You Have
A good first step is to check your existing contribution record.
OFWs can review their posted contributions through My.SSS and see how much progress they have already made toward their retirement requirements.

If you are still working in the UAE, you can also continue building your SSS record. Land-based OFWs can generate a Payment Reference Number through My.SSS and pay through available SSS-accredited channels.

Hope for More, Prepare With What We Have
The strong interest in the OFW Pension Act shows how much retirement security matters to Filipinos abroad.
We hope the proposed ₱5,000 pension moves forward and eventually becomes law.
But retirement planning does not have to wait.
OFWs can check their SSS contributions, continue paying when applicable, work toward their retirement requirements, and follow the OFW Pension Act through official Senate records.
For now, OFWs can hope for additional support tomorrow while preparing with the retirement benefits available today.
