Manila, Philippines: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) distributed AKSYON Fund assistance to 92 distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on National Heroes Day.
The aid was handed out during a gathering called “Parangal sa Bagong Bayani ng Mundo,” held at the Tahanan ng OFW, where officials met with workers through a program that included conversations, songs, dances, and the turnover of financial support.
Who Received Assistance
According to the DMW, the 92 beneficiaries received different levels of support based on their situations. The breakdown was as follows:
- 86 distressed OFWs received ₱50,000 each.
- 6 OFWs received ₱75,000 each for medical assistance.
The recipients came from two regions:
- 72 beneficiaries from the National Capital Region (NCR).
- 20 beneficiaries from Region IV-A.
Support Under the UPLIFT Initiative
The distribution followed a directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. under the UPLIFT initiative. The program aims to strengthen support for OFWs and their families, with a focus on those facing crisis, emergency, or distress situations abroad.
The AKSYON Fund serves as a financial safety net for workers who encounter difficulties while overseas, offering direct help during times when they need it most.
OFWs Recognized as Modern-Day Heroes
DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac noted that honoring the nation’s heroes also means paying tribute to OFWs and their families. He described Filipino workers abroad as living heroes, placing them alongside those the country celebrates on National Heroes Day.
Cacdac also shared that President Marcos Jr. added ₱3.0 billion to the AKSYON Fund for 2026. This increase brings the total fund to ₱5 billion, which is intended to better address the needs of OFWs during crises and emergencies.
