Foreign nationals need a valid residence visa to live or work in Dubai and the other UAE emirates. Compared to tourist visas, these residence visas allow residents to stay in Dubai and the other emirates for longer periods.
The right visa depends on a person’s job, income, qualifications, investments, studies, or family relationship.
Below are the main UAE residence visas and how long each one remains valid.

Standard Employment Visa: 2 Years
The standard employment residence visa is for foreign nationals hired by a company in the UAE.
It is generally valid for two years and can be renewed if the worker remains employed and continues to meet the requirements.
The employer normally handles the work permit and residence application. Domestic workers also receive employer-sponsored residence permits under a separate process.
A tourist or visit visa does not give a person permission to work in the UAE.
Green Residence: 5 Years
The Green Residence is valid for five years and is renewable.
It allows eligible people to sponsor themselves instead of relying on a UAE employer.
It is available to skilled workers, freelancers, self-employed professionals, investors, and business partners who meet the required income, education, or investment conditions.
A skilled worker generally needs a valid UAE contract, a bachelor’s degree, an eligible occupation, and a salary of at least AED15,000 per month.
Golden Residence: 5 or 10 Years
The Golden Residence is issued for five or 10 years, depending on the category.
It is intended for qualified investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, specialised professionals, talented individuals, outstanding students, humanitarian workers, and frontline heroes.
Most categories receive 10-year residence, while some student categories may receive five years.
Golden Residence holders can live, work, and study in the country without a regular employer sponsor.
Blue Residence: 10 Years
The Blue Residence is valid for 10 years and can be renewed.
It is offered to people who have made exceptional contributions to environmental protection and sustainability.
Eligible applicants may include researchers, environmental advocates, award winners, investors, and members of recognised international organisations.
Virtual Work / Remote Work / Digital Nomad Residence: 1 Year
Dubai’s virtual work residence is valid for one year and can be extended.
It allows a person employed outside the UAE to live in Dubai while working remotely.
Applicants must show proof of overseas employment, health insurance, and monthly earnings of at least US$3,500.
Retirement Residence: 5 Years
Qualified foreign retirees can obtain a five-year retirement residence.
Applicants must normally be at least 55 years old or have worked for at least 15 years. They must also meet property, savings, or income requirements.
The visa can be renewed if the conditions are still met.
Family and Student Residence Visas
A UAE resident may sponsor eligible family members.
The validity of a family residence permit normally follows the sponsor’s visa and cannot extend beyond it.
Students may be sponsored by a parent or an approved educational institution. Their residence may be renewed while they remain enrolled.
Applicants should check their exact eligibility with the ICP or GDRFA Dubai before applying.
