UAE Green Residency Who Can Apply Without Employer Sponsorship

DUBAI: Skilled professionals, freelancers, self-employed workers and investors in the UAE may qualify for a five-year Green Residency without needing a sponsor.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) updated its Green Residency guide in August 2026, giving a clearer summary of who can qualify and the main requirements for each category.

UAE Green Residency Who Can Apply Without Employer Sponsorship

Green Residency Is Valid for Five Years

The Green Residency is a renewable five-year residence permit.

Unlike a regular employment residence visa, it does not require a sponsor inside the UAE.

Eligible holders may also sponsor family members, including a spouse and children, subject to the applicable requirements.

ICP says the program is designed for skilled workers, freelancers, self-employed professionals, investors and business partners.

Skilled Workers Need at Least AED 15,000 Salary

For skilled workers, ICP lists four main requirements.

Applicants must:

  • Have a valid employment contract in the UAE
  • Be classified under professional levels 1 to 3 based on the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation classification
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree
  • Earn at least AED 15,000 per month

This means the Green Residency is not limited to freelancers.

Qualified employees can also apply even while working for a UAE employer.

Freelancers Need a Permit and Income Proof

Freelancers and self-employed workers have a different set of requirements.

They must hold a freelance or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

Applicants must also have at least a bachelor’s degree, specialised diploma or equivalent qualification.

ICP says freelancers must show stable income or financial solvency.

Their freelance income during the previous two years must be at least AED 360,000 per year, or the equivalent in another currency.

Investors and Business Partners Can Also Qualify

The Green Residency is also open to eligible investors and business partners.

Applicants under this category must provide proof of investment or participation in a UAE business.

They must also have the required licences and approvals from the relevant authorities.

Green Residency Can Cover Family Members

One advantage of Green Residency is that holders can sponsor eligible family members.

ICP says Green Residency holders may sponsor a spouse and children under the approved conditions.

The authority’s general residence rules also allow Green Residency holders to sponsor first-degree relatives, subject to the applicable residence requirements.
