IBM History
International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) is another American multinational technology company included in the list of top companies in technology industry. Its main headquarter is located in Armonk, New York. It operates in more than 170 countries. It is traded in NYSE as IBM, a DJIA component, a S&P 100 component, and a S&P 500 component. The company makes and sells computer hardware, software, middleware, and hosting and consulting services. It is also a major research organization in the US, holding patents for 27 years. Some of the major inventions by this company include automated teller machine (ATM), hard disk drive, magnetic stripe card, floppy disk, relation database, and SQL programming language.
In the 1880s, the companies that would use create IBM were established. The four businesses were merged in New York to form Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR), which had 1,300 employees and offices in New York, Ohio, Michigan, Washington, and Toronto. CTR produced machinery for sale and rent. Some of them are commercial scales, meal and cheese slicers, industrial time recorders, tabulators, and punched cards. Later on, the hyphenated name of CTR was changed to International Business Machines (IBM) since Thomas J. Watson, Sr. didn’t like the idea of its original name.
