UAE citizens renewing their passports will no longer need to complete a separate Emirates ID update, following a new service integration rolled out under the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security Smart Services platform.
The unified process allows passport renewal data to automatically update a citizen’s Emirates ID record through a single digital journey. The move is part of the UAE’s wider zero-bureaucracy initiative, which aims to reduce paperwork, limit repeat applications, and cut down the need for in-person visits.

What has changed
Under the new system, UAE citizens renewing their passports through official government channels no longer need to file a separate request to amend their Emirates ID details.
Previously, passport renewal and Emirates ID updates were treated as two separate transactions. Citizens had to re-submit documents, verify identity details again, and in some cases book additional appointments to ensure both records matched. The unified service removes this duplication by automatically syncing passport data with Emirates ID records.
Who the service applies to
The unified passport and Emirates ID renewal process currently applies to UAE citizens only. It is designed specifically for national identity documents issued and managed by the UAE government.
The ICP Smart Services platform continues to offer a wide range of services for residents and expatriates, such as visa renewals and Emirates ID replacements. However, the one-step passport and Emirates ID renewal process is limited to citizens at this stage.
How the unified process works
Passport renewal remains a government-managed service for UAE nationals. Once a citizen renews their passport, the updated details are automatically recognized within ICP systems and reflected in the Emirates ID record.
In most cases, citizens can complete or track the process digitally through ICP’s official platforms. A visit to a service center may still be required in specific cases, such as biometric verification or system exceptions.
Why this matters to residents
Valid and synchronized identity documents are essential for accessing government services, banking, travel, employment verification, and other official transactions. Mismatched or outdated records can lead to delays or service disruptions.
By unifying the passport and Emirates ID renewal process, ICP aims to shorten processing time, reduce repeat submissions, and improve the overall experience for citizens managing national identity documents.
What citizens should know
Citizens are advised to use only official ICP digital channels for renewals and follow-up actions. While the process has been simplified, timelines and biometric requirements may still apply depending on individual cases.
Further enhancements are expected as ICP continues to expand its Smart Services and zero-bureaucracy initiatives.
