Etisalat Telecom Company History
Etisalat Telecommunication Group Company PJSC has a brand name Etisalat and is one of the two telecommunications company in the United Arab Emirates. It has branches in 15 countries in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. In February 2014, the company was considered the 14th largest mobile network operator in the globe, with a total consumer base of over 167 million. In 2012, Etisalat was named by Forbes Middle East as the most powerful company in the country.
The company was founded in 1976 as a joint-stock company. The initial owners were the International Aeradio Limited, some local partners, and a British Company. The ownership was changed in 1983 when the UNAE government became the owner of the 60% part of the company while the rest remained on the hands of the public. In 1991, Etisalat owned the UAE central government’s favor to offer wired and wireless telecommunication services in the UAE and other countries. This was stated in Federal Law No. 1. Apart from offering services, the company also had the right to issue licenses and permits to won, import, manufacture, use, or operate telecommunications equipment. By this, Etisalat Telecom earned both control and regulatory powers.
