UAE Allows Return Even with Expired Residency—Here’s How

UAE: The United Arab Emirates has introduced a temporary measure allowing expatriate residents stranded abroad to return to the country even if their residency visas have already expired.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) announced that eligible residents can re-enter the UAE without applying for a new entry permit. The policy is valid for one month, from February 28 to March 31, 2026.

Important: This move comes in response to exceptional circumstances that prevented many residents from returning on time, especially amid ongoing disruptions affecting travel in the region due to the ongoing crisis.

Who can benefit from this policy

The initiative applies to:

  • UAE residents currently outside the country

  • Individuals whose residency visas expired on or before February 28, 2026

Instead of going through the usual process of securing a new entry permit, affected residents can return directly and fix their documents after arrival.

What happens after returning

Upon re-entry, residents are required to regularize their residency status by completing the necessary procedures through official UAE channels.

Authorities have not removed compliance steps. Instead, they are easing the entry process to allow people to return first, then handle documentation without added pressure.

Why this matters now

For many expats, especially overseas Filipino workers and other foreign residents, visa expiration while abroad can lead to:

  • Delayed return to work

  • Extra costs for new permits

  • Risk of losing employment or residency status

This temporary measure removes a major barrier. It allows affected residents to return faster and avoid starting the visa process from scratch.

Key benefits of the policy

According to the ICP, the decision aims to:

  • Ease travel procedures during a critical period

  • Support residents affected by travel disruptions

  • Provide flexibility in fixing legal status without penalties

It also gives residents more room to adjust their travel plans, especially those who had to delay flights or were unable to leave due to external conditions.

A short window to act

Authorities emphasized that the policy is only valid until March 31, 2026. After this period, standard entry and visa rules are expected to resume.

For expats still abroad with expired visas, this creates a clear deadline to return without going through additional requirements.

What expats should do next

Residents are advised to:

  • Confirm eligibility based on visa status

  • Monitor official ICP updates

  • Prepare documents needed for status regularization after arrival

The UAE said further updates, if any, will be announced through official government channels.

For now, the message is simple: if your UAE residency visa expired while you were abroad, you may still have a chance to return without starting over.
