First Passenger Run: Etihad Rail Moves 350 Travelers

UAE authorities operated a special passenger service on Etihad Rail this week, transporting more than 350 passengers while regional flight suspensions disrupted air travel.

The exceptional train service ran between Al Ghuwaifat Station on the Saudi border and Al Faya Station in Abu Dhabi, providing an alternative way for travelers to return to the UAE during the temporary disruption of flights, Emirates News Agency reported.

The service was organized by Etihad Rail in coordination with the Abu Dhabi Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre (ADCMC) as part of efforts to support stranded passengers during ongoing regional developments.

Special Run Operated Before Official Launch

The passenger trip was notable because it took place ahead of Etihad Rail’s official passenger service launch, which is expected later this year.

According to authorities, the operation was carried out through a carefully managed system that followed safety procedures and emergency protocols.

A video shared by the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office showed arriving passengers being welcomed with flowers after completing the journey.

One passenger thanked authorities for the service, saying the train allowed them to return from Jeddah to the UAE safely and easily despite the unusual travel situation.

Another family member said officials had stayed in contact with affected families and helped coordinate their safe return.

Additional Train Services May Continue

Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, confirmed that additional passenger services have been scheduled.

He said the trains will continue operating if needed, depending on how long flight disruptions last.

Operations are being coordinated closely with relevant authorities and will run until air traffic resumes and flights return to normal schedules.

Etihad Rail also confirmed that freight operations across the national railway network are continuing as usual.

Demonstrating the UAE’s Transport Readiness

Officials said the special passenger run highlighted the technical and operational readiness of the UAE’s national rail network, showing how the system can be used flexibly during emergencies.

Matar Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director General of ADCMC, said activating the passenger service ahead of its launch reflects the country’s ability to quickly mobilize resources to address urgent public needs while maintaining long-term infrastructure plans.

The UAE’s national railway network spans about 900 kilometers, connecting major cities, ports, and industrial zones from Ghuwaifat in the west to Fujairah on the east coast.

Authorities say the railway will play an increasingly important role in transport connectivity and regional mobility once the full passenger service begins later this year.

What Residents Should Know

For now, the special train services are being used primarily to assist travelers affected by flight suspensions. Authorities say additional runs may continue if needed while air travel schedules stabilize.
