RTA Dubai Opens New Tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street to Ease Traffic (Reduces Travel from 9.7 Minutes to 3.8 minutes)

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)  has opened a brand-new tunnel along Umm Suqeim Street. The tunnel is 800 meters long and features four lanes in each direction, making it easier for cars to move through the area. It is part of the Umm Suqeim Street Development Project, which connects Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

This tunnel will help over one million residents in nearby neighborhoods, including Al Barsha South, Dubai Hills, Arjan, and Dubai Science Park.

Easier and Faster Travel

The new tunnel will save drivers a lot of time. Before, the trip between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road took 9.7 minutes. Now, it only takes 3.8 minutes—a 61% cut in travel time! With more room to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, the tunnel also improves traffic flow and reduces congestion.

RTA used advanced technology to complete this project efficiently. Drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) were used to gather and analyze construction data in real time. This made the building process faster and decisions smarter. The use of drones reduced the time needed for field surveys by a whopping 60%.

Additionally, time-lapse imaging was employed to monitor the tunnel construction progress. This boosted the efficiency of project monitoring by 40%, making sure everything stayed on track and was completed on time.

Previous Phases of the Project

The latest development is part of a bigger project to improve Umm Suqeim Street. Back in 2013, RTA completed the first phase of the project. This included the construction of two three-lane bridges and two intersections with traffic lights. The aim was to improve connectivity between important areas like Al Quoz and Al Barsha and increase pedestrian safety through three crossing bridges.

Another milestone came in 2020, when RTA built a 500-meter bridge near Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South. This bridge was created to enhance connections to Dubai Hills Mall and can also handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour, just like the newly opened tunnel.

With the tunnel now open, many Dubai residents will spend less time in traffic and enjoy smoother commutes. This project highlights how Dubai is using smart solutions to improve its infrastructure and ensure that residents benefit from fast and reliable transport options.
