Abu Dhabi: Man Awarded Dh10,000 After Assault at Pedestrian Crossing

ABU DHABI, UAE: A young man in Abu Dhabi has been awarded Dh10,000 in compensation after being physically assaulted for urging a driver to adhere to traffic rules at a pedestrian crossing. The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil, and Administrative Cases Court ruled in favor of the victim, following a prior criminal conviction of the driver.

Incident Details

The incident occurred when the driver overtook stationary vehicles and abruptly stopped in the middle of a pedestrian crossing, endangering those crossing. According to Emarat Al Youm, the young man tapped the rear of the vehicle to alert the driver. In response, the driver exited the car and physically and verbally assaulted the young man.

Court Ruling

The court found that the assault caused both financial and psychological harm to the victim. The claimant was unable to carry out personal activities for 21 days, resulting in financial losses, for which Dh5,000 was awarded.

An additional Dh5,000 was granted for moral damages, including distress and humiliation caused by the public nature of the attack.

The driver was ordered to pay the compensation along with legal costs, bringing the total financial consequences of the incident to Dh15,000, including a prior Dh5,000 fine for the assault.
