Kuwaiti Couple Sentenced to Death for Murder of Domestic Worker

KUWAIT: A Kuwaiti court has sentenced a husband and wife to death by hanging for the tragic abuse and murder of their domestic worker. The court found the couple guilty of unlawful detention, repeated beatings, denial of medical care, and forced labor, which ultimately led to the worker’s death

According to a report by GulfNews, court documents show the domestic worker was held against her will in the couple’s home, where she endured relentless beatings with a stick. Despite her visibly deteriorating health, the couple refused to allow her to seek medical treatment. Instead, they forced her to continue working under harsh conditions until her body could no longer endure the abuse. The court ruled that the couple’s actions amounted to assault leading to death, a charge that carries the death penalty in Kuwait.

The Criminal Court, led by Judge Abdulwahab Al Muaili, convicted the couple of assault leading to death, a charge that carries the death penalty in Kuwait. Prosecutors revealed that the couple intentionally caused harm, leading to the worker’s death, and called for the maximum punishment.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of domestic workers in Kuwait. Earlier this year, another case involving the brutal murder of a Filipina worker led to a temporary ban on sending Filipino domestic workers to Kuwait. These incidents have raised awareness about the need for better protection and rights for migrant workers.

The court’s decision sends a strong message about accountability and justice for victims of abuse.
