This Dubai Innovation Is Helping Feed Stray Cats Across the City

Dubai has introduced a new initiative aimed at helping stray animals while promoting a culture of compassion across the emirate.

Dubai Municipality recently launched “Ehsan Stations,” a first-of-its-kind project in the region that uses AI-powered smart devices to feed stray animals such as cats in designated areas across the city.

The initiative reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to animal welfare and community kindness, particularly among residents who care deeply about the wellbeing of animals in public spaces.

Smart Feeding Stations for Stray Animals

As part of the pilot phase, 12 Ehsan Stations will be installed across key locations in Dubai.

These include:

  • 10 stations in public parks

  • 2 stations in facilities operated by Dubai Holding

Each station is equipped with an AI-based system capable of detecting stray animals and dispensing food automatically. The devices can also collect data that helps authorities better understand and manage stray animal populations.

Officials say the technology allows animals to receive food in a controlled and sustainable way while reducing random feeding practices that may negatively affect parks, sidewalks, and other public areas.

Supporting Compassion and Responsible Care

Dubai Municipality said the initiative reflects the emirate’s values of compassion, generosity, and responsible urban living.

Dr. Naseem Mohammed Rafee, Acting CEO of the Environment, Health and Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the stations aim to combine animal welfare with smarter management of stray animal populations.

She noted that the project supports humane values while helping maintain ecological balance and protecting public health.

The stations were designed and manufactured in the UAE using advanced technologies, and the current rollout serves as a pilot stage to evaluate how the system performs before potential expansion across the city.

Humane Programs Already in Place

Dubai Municipality already follows a scientific and humane approach when managing stray or free-roaming animals.

Among its existing programs are:

  • Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR)

  • Trap–Neuter–Vaccinate–Return (TNVR)

Under these programs, stray animals are safely trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, and returned to their original locations if they pose no risk to the community.

The municipality also operates a temporary shelter for stray animals and regularly promotes adoption opportunities through its official website.

Residents Encouraged to Help

Authorities are also urging residents to play their part in supporting animal welfare.

Pet owners are encouraged to follow proper health practices and treat animals responsibly, especially when travelling or leaving their homes for extended periods.

Residents who notice risks, mistreatment, or concerns involving stray animals can report them through Dubai Municipality’s hotline at 800900.

The Ehsan Stations initiative builds on Dubai’s broader environmental efforts. In previous projects, the municipality introduced “Fountains of Mercy,” which includes 50 fountains providing water for birds and wildlife across urban and desert areas.

Officials say initiatives like these highlight the UAE’s growing focus on compassion, sustainability, and coexistence between communities and animals.
