Dubai Municipality History
Dubai Municipality was born in 1954. It started with just 7 employees. The first municipal council, which consisted of Emirate’s elders and traders, was established in February 1957. This council had limited authority, which included the maintenance of the aesthetics and cleanliness of the city, submission of healthcare and urban planning proposals, and regulation of construction works and coordination of the beautification of Dubai.
A Local Order to build the Dubai Municipal Council was issued in 1961. However, this was cancelled by the Founding Decree of 1974 saying that Dubai Municipality was an independent administrative authority with legal powers all over Dubai. In 1980, another Municipal Council Decree was passed, saying that the council should consist of 32 members.
