DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) History

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is a government agency that was established by Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum on January 1, 1992. It was a product of the merger of Dubai Water Department and Dubai Electricity company that were once operating as separate entities. The former ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Maktoum built these two companies in 1959. Today, DEWA is serving people in Dubai to provide sufficient sources of water and electricity.

In 2017, DEWA has 10,200 megawatts capacity of electricity and 470 million imperial gallons of water daily. By the end of the same year, it has a total workforce of 11,000 employees, 796,764 clients with electricity, and 705,376 clients with water.

DEWA has been using the traditional gas-fired power plants but recently, it added solar power to its energy sources. In 2013, a 13-MW solar plant was installed at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park while in January 2015, another 200-MW was purchased from ACWA Power. DEWA has started the installation of its 800-MW solar power plant in 2015 and to be completed by 2020. This is considered as the recent addition to the energy portfolio of the company.
