UAE: Man Jailed for Sorcery and Sharing Private Photos to Win Back Wife

In a case that has captured public attention, the Fujairah Court of Appeal has upheld a six-month jail sentence for a man convicted of engaging in sorcery and violating his wife’s privacy. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly paid over Dh30,000 to multiple individuals claiming to be spiritual healers in an attempt to win back his estranged wife’s love.

According to a report from Emarat Al Youm, the man admitted to contacting a woman from another Arab country who advertised her services on social media. He paid her Dh20,000 and shared personal photos of his wife, along with their phone numbers, as part of the arrangement. When the woman demanded an additional Dh25,000, he refused, prompting her to threaten exposure. Undeterred, he sought the services of two other individuals, paying one Dh10,000 and engaging with another who did not request payment.

The case came to light when the wife, who had already filed for divorce due to alleged abuse, received evidence of her husband’s activities from one of the spiritual healers. The evidence included photos, videos, and messages, which she submitted to the authorities. The wife claimed that her husband’s actions not only violated her privacy but also endangered her and her family.

The Public Prosecution charged the man with multiple offenses, including engaging in fraud and sorcery, violating privacy by sharing personal images via WhatsApp, and unlawfully possessing private materials. The court ordered the confiscation and destruction of all related materials.

Despite his appeal and denial of the charges, the appellate court upheld the original verdict, citing strong evidence and legal reasoning. The man will serve six months in prison, marking a stern warning against such practices in the UAE.

This case highlights the UAE’s strict stance on privacy violations and fraudulent activities, particularly those involving sorcery, which is considered a serious offense under the country’s laws. Again as a final reminder: black magic, sorcery, witchcraft, etc. are strictly prohibited under UAE law, as they are considered contrary to Islamic beliefs. Items related to these practices are also banned to prevent their use.
