Big Upgrade: UAE Orders Free WiFi, Clinics in Worker Housing

DUBAI: New labor housing rules in the UAE now require free internet, 24-hour clinics, and better living spaces for workers, following updated standards from Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization.

Free Internet Now Required in Worker Housing

Under the new rules, employers must provide free internet access in labour accommodations. This aims to help workers stay connected with family, access services, and improve daily life outside work hours.

The update is part of a wider push to improve both living conditions and mental wellbeing of workers across the UAE.

24/7 Clinics and On-Site Medical Teams for Large Facilities

For accommodations housing 1,000 workers or more, stricter health rules apply:

  • 24-hour medical clinics must be available
  • On-site doctors and nurses are required
  • Ambulance services must be ready for emergencies

Employers must also provide first aid rooms, isolation areas, and emergency response plans.

Recreation, Social Activities Now Mandatory

Housing managers are now required to organize social and recreational activities, especially during official holidays.

The goal is simple: reduce stress and support workers’ mental health.

Facilities must also include:

  • Recreational spaces
  • Areas for rest and leisure
  • Access to financial services
  • Safer Locations and Better Living Standards

Worker housing must be:

  • Close to industrial zones and transport links
  • Far from environmental hazards and family-only areas

Inside the facilities, employers must ensure:

  • Clean drinking water
  • Proper sanitation and lighting
  • Safe food preparation areas
  • Pest control systems
  • Safe gas installations

Clear Instructions in Multiple Languages

To avoid confusion, all accommodations must provide written guides in different languages, covering:

  • Worker rights and responsibilities
  • Health and safety rules
  • Emergency contacts and complaint channels

Emergency signs, evacuation plans, and fire safety instructions must also be clearly displayed. Regular drills are required.
