DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates and the Philippines are working together on possible steps to better protect the health of Filipino workers in the UAE.
The discussion focuses on creating a more formal system that may help cover medical check-ups and treatment for overseas Filipino workers through the national insurance systems of both countries.
The move is important for thousands of OFWs in the UAE who may delay medical care because of cost, work schedules, or lack of clear information on available support.

A Health Plan That Looks Beyond Emergencies
The planned cooperation is not only about helping workers when they are already sick. Both countries also saw the need to improve health education among Filipinos working abroad.
Officials noted that many OFWs may neglect common illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes. These health problems can become serious when not checked early.
For many Filipino workers, long work hours, stress, limited rest, and changes in diet can make regular health monitoring harder. Some may only seek medical help when symptoms are already severe.
The proposed health cooperation aims to encourage earlier check-ups and better awareness.
UAE Official Praises Filipino Health Workers
Dr. Maha Barakat, UAE Assistant Minister for Medical Affairs and Life Science, personally recognized the efforts of Department of Health Secretary Ted Herbosa in helping protect the health of Filipinos in the UAE.
She also praised Filipino healthcare workers, calling their skills world-class and something the Philippines should be proud of.
According to Dr. Barakat, Filipino workers play an important role in the global health workforce. Because of this, she said it is only right for both the UAE and the Philippines to help care for them.
