In light of the recent incident involving a 6-year old Indian boy who was left behind and locked inside a school bus, the UAE police stress the importance of keeping a close eye on children, as well as unattended vehicles, considering the current weather conditions in the country coming into the summer season.
And while still considered rare, incidences of children getting trapped inside vehicles have stirred national alarm, as such cases can lead to suffocation and even death.
[WATCH] Do Not Leave Unattended Cars Unlocked, Police Issues Warning Video
In this regard, the Abu Dhabi Police have posted a video warning parents not to leave their unattended cars unlocked.
In the video re-enactment, two Emirati boys can be seen approaching a vehicle left in the parking lot of a villa. As they check out the car, they find the door of the vehicle unlocked.
The boys managed to open the trunk, and then dangerously proceed to get inside the rear storage and lock themselves in.
The video shows the importance of keeping vehicles locked, especially when left unattended at a parking lot, the garage, or even around the villa.
The Abu Dhabi Police has issued an advisory to the parents warning them of the dangers caused by leaving their vehicle unlocked to avoid situations that could lead to a child’s death.
Moreover, the police called on parents to continuously monitor young children as they could lock themselves inside vehicles, leading to suffocation or death.
Similarly, children should not be left alone in the car with the air-conditioning turned on for long as this could lead to asphyxiation and bodily harm to the person left inside the card.
These simple reminders are very important, considering that children can go around the house and slip away from the sight of their guardians. Being mindful at all times is the best way to address accidents due to negligence.
During the summer, when children are mostly at home or on vacation, it also pays to understand that they can be quite restless, and they can go to places where they can “play” or pass time. Except for very young children, adults can set rules as to where the kids are allowed and restricted to go.
Furthermore, having surveillance cameras inside the house can also help the parents and guardians monitor the activity or the whereabouts of the children, if close supervision is not possible at all times.
