Two New Toll Gate Locations Announced
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) confirmed that the new gates will be installed in the following areas:
- Al Qurm Gate – Wahat Al Karama Street (entry and exit of Sheikh Zayed Street)
- Ghantoot Gate – Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street
These gates will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, covering both directions of traffic.
How Much Drivers Will Pay
Each time a vehicle passes through the new toll gates, a AED 4 fee will apply.
This follows the existing Darb toll system already used in Abu Dhabi, where charges are automatically deducted from registered accounts.
Who Is Exempt from Paying?
Some motorists may still qualify for toll exemptions. According to the ITC, one vehicle per eligible category can be exempt, including:
- Senior citizens
- People of Determination
- Low-income Emiratis
- Retired citizens
These exemptions are part of Abu Dhabi’s existing toll policy.
Alternative Routes to Avoid Toll Fees
Drivers who want to avoid paying toll fees can use nearby roads:
For Al Qurm Gate:
- Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street
- Arabian Gulf Street
For Ghantoot Gate:
- Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street
These options may help reduce costs, but travel time could vary depending on traffic.
Why These Toll Gates Are Being Added
The ITC said the new toll points were selected based on traffic studies, including road usage, congestion levels, and available detours.
The goal is to:
- Improve traffic flow during peak hours
- Reduce congestion in busy areas
- Support Abu Dhabi’s growing road network
Officials will continue to monitor how the new gates affect traffic and make adjustments if needed.
What Drivers Should Expect Next
If you regularly pass through these areas, you should:
- Check if your Darb account is active and funded
- Plan routes in advance
- Consider alternate roads if you want to avoid fees
Expect possible traffic changes in the first few weeks after launch as drivers adjust to the new system.
