Dubai Airports History

Dubai Airports currently owns and facilitates the development and operations of Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC). It is one of the world’s busiest airports driven by international passenger traffic. The company provides a world-class experience to its passengers by giving them secure, safe, and environmental-friendly airports. It has partnership with different airline and stakeholders to help its business grow in Dubai.

The history of Dubai Airports started when it established Dubai Airport in 1959, located 4 km from Dubai City. In 1963, it started with an asphalt runway and was opened in 1965 together with other new facilities. In 1969, it was able to accommodate nine airlines with 20 destinations. When it reached the 70s, major developments were seen at Dubai International. There was a brand new three-storey terminal building, a new control tower, the runway was lengthen, and there were additional taxiways. It was 1980 when Dubai International became a member of the Airports Council International (ACI).

Dubai Duty Free was launched in 1983 at Dubai International. It made an annual turnover of US$20 million in its first year. Since then, it grew and became the biggest airport retailer in 2017 with a turnover of US$1.93 billion. The recent achievement made by DXB was when it welcomes its 1,000,000,000th international passenger.

Dubai International opened on September 30, 1960. It served about 86.4 million passengers in 2019, with an annual average passenger growth rate of 13%. It connects more than 240 destinations in 6 continents through over 100 airlines.

Its airport facilities are world-class. It includes the Concourse D—a state of the art facility worth $1.2 billion and serves all international airlines operating in Terminal 1, Course A—the first and biggest A380 facility used exclusively by Emirates airline, and Terminal 2.
