Woman Detained at UAE Airport Over Instagram Comment for calling handbag fake

A woman traveling with her family was detained at a UAE airport after authorities flagged her for a legal complaint stemming from an Instagram comment. The incident, which occurred upon her return to the UAE, highlights the importance of being cautious about online activity, especially in a country with strict cybercrime laws.

The UAE enforces stringent regulations on online behavior, including comments and posts on social media platforms. Even seemingly harmless remarks can lead to legal consequences if they are perceived as defamatory or harmful. This case serves as a stark reminder for residents and visitors to exercise caution when engaging online, as violations of the UAE’s Cybercrime and Anti-Rumours Law can result in hefty fines or imprisonment.

The Incident: A Comment Gone Wrong

According to reports, the woman, traveling with her husband and children, was stopped during immigration procedures and informed of a legal case filed against her in Ajman. The complaint was linked to a comment she had posted on Instagram, where she referred to another woman’s luxury handbag as “fake.”

This remark reportedly led to ridicule and online bullying directed at the handbag owner, who subsequently filed a complaint for reputational harm.

Legal Consequences and Resolution

The detained woman spent a night in custody before being transferred to Ajman for legal proceedings. Authorities later facilitated an amicable resolution between the two parties, avoiding further legal action.

However, officials emphasized that if the complaint had not been withdrawn, the woman could have faced severe penalties, including fines ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 500,000 or imprisonment.

Ajman Police’s Warning to Social Media Users

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Mohammed bin Hazim Al Suwaidi of Ajman Police highlighted the risks of underestimating the legal implications of social media activity. “Some people may think an Instagram comment is something simple, but it can create unnecessary legal problems,” he stated. He urged residents and visitors to be mindful of their online interactions to avoid similar situations.

This news serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of online behavior in the UAE. Whether a resident or a visitor, understanding and respecting the country’s cybercrime laws is essential to avoid unnecessary legal complications.
