40 Dubai Tunnels Will Soon Turn Into Public Art

DUBAI: More than 40 road tunnels across Dubai may soon become permanent public art spaces, as Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and the Roads and Transport Authority opened applications for Emirati and UAE based creatives.

The open call invites artists, designers, and architects to submit ideas that can turn tunnel walls into bold, colourful, and lasting artworks. Applications opened on May 11, 2026, and will close on June 15, 2026, at 23:59 UAE time.

From Plain Tunnel Walls to Daily Art Views

The project is part of the Dubai Tunnels Initiative, which supports the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The goal is to make public infrastructure more connected to culture, beauty, and daily life.

Instead of keeping tunnel walls plain, Dubai wants these spaces to become part of the city’s creative identity. For residents, workers, and visitors, the artworks may become part of regular commutes, school runs, and late night drives.

This makes the project more than decoration. It turns common transport routes into cultural spaces that people can see without entering a museum or gallery.

Who Can Send an Art Proposal

The open call is for Emirati and UAE based artists, designers, and architects. This focus gives local and resident creatives a chance to shape how Dubai’s public spaces look.

Applicants must submit a complete proposal. This includes a concept statement, design boards, colour palette, and an implementation plan. The plan must also explain how public safety and artwork protection will be handled during and after installation.

What Dubai Wants to See

Organizers are looking for original works that have not been shown before. Designs should reflect Dubai’s identity, heritage, diversity, and future focused spirit.

Because the artworks will be placed inside tunnels, designs must be simple and clear. Drivers and passengers will often see them while moving, so the visuals should not feel crowded or distracting.

The brief also calls for strong use of colour, no text, and no visual clutter. Materials must be able to last under Dubai’s heat and weather conditions. Ceramic tile systems are preferred because they are durable and can keep bright colours over time.

What Artists Should Do Next

Interested applicants should register and check the full submission rules through the official Dubai Culture website before the June 15 deadline.
