Scam Alert: OWWA Warns vs Fake Scholarship Facebook Group

PHILIPPINES: The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has warned the public about a Facebook group falsely claiming to provide updates on its scholarship programs.

The group, named “Owwa Scholarship 2026 – 2027 updates,” has gathered around 67,000 members. Despite using OWWA’s logo and branding, the agency confirmed it is not affiliated with the page.

Fake Group Uses OWWA Name Without Authority

OWWA clarified that it did not create, manage, or authorize the Facebook group.

The agency stressed that any posts, announcements, or updates shared in the group are not official and should not be trusted as valid information about scholarship programs.

It also warned that unauthorized use of its name, logo, and materials is prohibited and may lead to legal action.

Risk of Misinformation and Possible Scams

According to OWWA, fake groups like this can mislead users by:

  • Sharing incorrect scholarship details
  • Posting outdated or false requirements
  • Asking for personal information or fees

These tactics may expose OFWs and their families to fraud.

Because scholarship programs are widely trusted, scammers often use them to gain attention and credibility.

OWWA Urges Public to Verify Information

To avoid being misled, OWWA advised the public to rely only on official sources.

For verified scholarship updates and programs:

  1. Call the OWWA Hotline: 1348
  2. Visit the nearest OWWA regional office
  3. Check official OWWA pages and announcements

If a page is not linked to OWWA’s official platforms, it should be treated as suspicious.
