ABU DHABI: A major medical breakthrough has been achieved in the UAE after Burjeel Medical City successfully performed the country’s first uniportal robotic lung surgery, offering a less invasive option for cancer patients.

What makes this surgery different
The procedure, called a uniportal robotic lobectomy, removes part of the lung through a single small cut measuring only 3 centimeters.
Unlike traditional surgery, which requires larger openings, this method uses robotic technology to improve precision while reducing damage to surrounding tissues.
Patient case: early detection saves time
The surgery was performed on a 37-year-old patient diagnosed with stage one lung cancer.
The patient first experienced a persistent dry cough that did not improve with medication. After further tests, including a CT scan and biopsy, doctors confirmed cancer and recommended surgery.
Advanced technology used during operation
The operation was led by thoracic surgeon Dr Taj Mohammed Fiyaz Chowdhry using the da Vinci Xi robotic system.
The system allows surgeons to control instruments with high precision, helping reduce risks during delicate procedures.
The surgery took about four hours and was completed without complications.
Faster recovery compared to traditional surgery
One of the biggest benefits of this new method is quicker recovery time.
- Patient discharged after 2 days
- Traditional recovery usually takes 5 to 7 days
- Patient returned to work within one month
This shows how minimally invasive techniques can help patients heal faster and get back to daily life sooner.
Who can benefit from this procedure
Doctors said this approach is best for patients with early-stage lung cancer and no major spread to lymph nodes.
It may not apply to all cases, but it offers a promising option for selected patients.
