PHILIPPINES: Even as many overseas Filipino workers look forward to a safe and peaceful journey—especially those returning home after stressful or uncertain situations—the Department of Migrant Workers is reminding travelers to stay alert.
The agency has reported a rise in in-flight theft incidents, warning that even moments meant for rest and comfort can be used by thieves to target unattended belongings.

How the theft schemes happen mid-flight
The agency said some passengers take advantage of moments when others are distracted or resting. These incidents often happen when bags are left unattended or placed in easy-to-reach areas.
According to the DMW, thieves use simple but effective tricks to steal valuables like cash, credit cards, and travel documents.
5 common tactics used by in-flight thieves
The DMW identified several methods used during flights:
- Dropping food or drinks to distract a passenger
- Asking for help or directions to shift attention
- Crowding or bumping into someone to access bags
- Pretending to help with overhead luggage
- Quickly leaving the plane after landing to avoid being caught
These actions are done quickly, making it hard for victims to notice right away.

What OFWs should do to protect valuables
The DMW is urging travelers to take simple safety steps:
- Keep passports, money, and gadgets within reach at all times
- Use bags with locks and wear them in front of the body
- Avoid placing valuables in seat pockets or shared compartments
- Stay alert even during long flights or when feeling tired
These small habits can greatly reduce the risk of losing important items.
What to do if you notice suspicious behavior
Passengers are advised not to confront suspected thieves directly. Instead:
- Inform cabin crew immediately
- Report incidents to airport authorities upon landing
Quick reporting can help prevent further incidents and assist in catching suspects.
