PHILIPPINES: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has partnered with GCash to launch a new program designed to help returning overseas Filipino workers rebuild their livelihoods.

Called “Buy Lokal, By OFWs”, the initiative focuses on helping OFWs start and grow small businesses in the Philippines.

The program comes at a time when many OFWs are returning home due to global uncertainties, job losses, or reduced income abroad.

What the program offers to OFWs

The new platform is not just a marketplace. It provides a full support system for OFW entrepreneurs.

Key benefits include:

  • Digital tools for managing and growing businesses
  • Access to GHub, where OFW products can be sold online
  • Financial education and business training
  • Marketing and branding support
  • Access to government services like SSS, Pag-IBIG, and PhilHealth

These features aim to help OFWs build long-term, stable income sources back home.

How OFWs can join the ‘Buy Lokal’ program

Returning OFWs who want to start or grow a business can apply directly through the “Buy Lokal, By OFWs – Powered by GCash” initiative.

The program is open to:

  • Returning OFWs who are reintegrating into the Philippines
  • OFWs with an existing small business
  • Those planning to sell products or services online

Once accepted, participants can list their products on GHub, where OFW-owned businesses are promoted to a wider market.

What OFWs will receive after joining

Approved applicants will gain access to tools and support designed to help them grow faster.

These include:

  • Free GCash for Business tools, including SoundPay devices
  • Product visibility on the GHub marketplace
  • Branding and marketing support from DMW and GCash
  • Digital payment tools and zero-fee transfers for easier transactions

This setup allows OFWs to accept payments, manage finances, and promote their business in one platform.

Step-by-step: How to apply

OFWs can follow these basic steps to join the program:

1. Prepare your documents
You will need proof that you are a returning OFW and starting or running a business. This may include:

  • Business details (DTI registration or product samples)

2. Register on GHub through GCash

  • Create or update your GCash account

  • Submit your business for listing on GHub

3. Coordinate with DMW offices
Applicants may be guided by:

  • National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO)
  • Local reintegration officers

4. Join onboarding events or trade fairs (optional)
These events help OFWs:

Why this matters for OFWs

Many returning OFWs struggle with:

  • Limited savings
  • Lack of business experience
  • Difficulty accessing financial services

This program directly targets those problems by giving them tools and support to start earning again.

Officials said the goal is simple: help OFWs achieve financial stability and spend more time with their families in the Philippines.
