All residents and citizens in the UAE now have access to the COVID-19 vaccine after the government has made it available to the public in all seven emirates, to increase their protection in case they get exposed to the virus.

Few months leading up to the New Year, the UAE was among the first few countries that have been actively engaged in research for the development of a vaccine against the devastating coronavirus, which has led us all to this pandemic for nearly a year now.

What You Need to Know About COVID-19 Vaccination in the UAE

The voluntary program was launched in Abu Dhabi and has since been extended to Dubai and the rest of the Northern Emirates where residents can get free vaccination if so desired. In line with this, we will share some of the most common questions that many ask regarding the UAE’s vaccination program against COVID-19. Keep reading below to know more.

What is the vaccine(s) currently being offered in the UAE?

As of this writing, the vaccine that’s being offered in the UAE for free is the China-manufactured Sinopharm vaccine.

The program involves getting two shots of the vaccine, 21 days apart.

As per the UAE regulators, Sinopharm has 86% efficiency and was approved for use after Phase 3 trials found it was effective against coronavirus.

UAE-wide trials in the summer involved 31,000 subjects.

In Dubai, some residents are eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination.

Six DHA health facilities are authorized to administer the vaccine. These are the following:

    • The Zabeel Primary Health Care Centre
    • Al Mizhar Primary Health Care Centre
    • Nad Al Hamr Primary Health Care Centre
    • Barsha Primary Health Care Centre
    • Uptown Mirdif Medical Fitness Centre
    • Hatta Hospital

Who can get the vaccine?

As mentioned, all residents and citizens are able to get the COVID-19 vaccine in the UAE. They must be at least 16 years of age to be able to avail of the vaccine from any emirate.

Meanwhile, residents with underlying health conditions, those below the prescribed age, and pregnant women aren’t advised to have the jab but are also encouraged to consult with their doctor first if they decide to still go for it.

What are the required documents that you need to present?

To avail of the vaccine, you need to present your Emirates ID as well as health insurance or health care cards upon arrival.

For many health centers, appointments aren’t required while others will require you to book an appointment first.

As of now, the government has rolled out a free vaccination program for all residents and citizens across the country.
